The opening act .......

For a while now I have been thinking about doing a multi-day tour on my bicycle. I like the idea of going it solo and having an adventure in a place unknown to me, all I needed was some inspiration to get me thinking about what journey I would like to do and plan it!

The inspiration came from the book "Crossing Europe on a Bike Called Reggie" by Andrew P Sykes, a tale of a man who decided to cycle from Reading to Brindisi in Italy. It's a wonderful book and would inspire anyone who reads it to have a go at a multi day tour.

With this in mind and the fact I wanted the opportunity to explore places unknown to me and had a desire to keep costs sensible I found myself reading about the EuroVelo routes (http://www.eurovelo.com). Once there I ended up honing in on France as I figured it was easy enough to get to and offered some routes that I could do in around 2 weeks. After some playing around on maps etc I decided upon an outline plan - cycle La Vélodyssée.

The initial high level plan would be a simple one:  get the ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff, cycle the route, get home. Simple, right?

So I am now in the throes of expanding that plan to cover such trivial things as:
  • working out how much time I think I will actually need
  • how will I get home to the UK
  • where will I stay
  • what kit will I need
  • when will I do it
These are just a few things on the list to work through, other things like putting in some training rides would also be a good idea. I have done some back to back days riding but nothing of real note so need to be physically and mentally prepared for this trip.

As an intro to the blog I have written enough, if you have any thoughts or comments let me know below.

Cheers and welcome to my journey!

Oooh before I forget, for web links to products, chances are that I am using an Amazon associates link - this takes you to the product on the Amazon UK website and if you purchase it I should get a tiny percentage commission which will go towards my expenses.
